Faroe Islands 0-2 ScotlandScotland defeated Faroe Islands with a comfortable margin of 2-0 to rekindle the country's hopes of qualifying for the Euro 2008 championship next year.
Though Scotland started the qualifying campaign with a bang, winning first three games, including a memorable 1-0 victory over France, defeats against Ukraine and Italy saw them slip off the pace at the top and drop down to fourth place. However Ukraine's defeat against France on Saturday and the latest victory has seen Scotland back in contention for qualifying to the next year's championship.
Scotland finally put behind the ghost of playing at the Toftir Stadium, winning its first match in three outings to the dilapidated enclosure. Things were not rosy from the start though. Garry O'Connor struck the post while Kris Boyd missed a sitter of a chance.
Just when it looked Scottish fans will have to prepare for yet another disappointment, Shaun Maloney came good, grabbing the chance given to him by the national coach. The Aston Villa opened his account for the national team with an exquisite free kick in the 31st minute that left Jakup Mikkelsen rooted on the spot.
Scottish fans once again jumped out of their seats four minutes later when the reformed striker O'Connor continued his goal scoring form to Scotland by pouncing on the rebound, after Mikkelsen had tried to parry his shot away from the goal.
Scotland came into the second half with a single intention, to get three points from the game. This saw them sit deeper and deeper as the game progressed, providing space to Faroe Islands players, who took up the challenge and twice hit the woodwork.
However lady luck was on Scotland's side and Alan McLeish's men held on to the two goal lead to win the match and get vital three points that could yet see them qualify for the Euro 2008 finals next year. Collecting 12 points from 6 games, Scotland is currently just one point behind second placed Italy and 3 behind group leaders France. Faroe Islands v Scotland ended with an expected away win.
