Fans Plan Kop TakeoverLiverpool supporters unhappy with US tycoons Gillett and Hicks are planning to buy back their club from the duo. Gillett and Hicks have backed manager Benitez, refinanced the club and unveiled plans for a new 71,000 seater stadium. It has not been enough for some fans.
Share Liverpool FC group hope to combine 100,000 Liverpool fans from around the globe raising £500 million to purchase the club and build a new stadium. Full details surrounding the plans will be released later in the week. However it is expected that each supporter will need to invest around £5,000 each for a stake.
Media speculation has been rife in recent weeks regarding a buyout by the club from Dubai’s DIC. The speculation has not helped performances on the field and Hicks and Gillett hoped to end rumours with recent statements. However, rather than silence unrest the refinancing deal has led to widespread criticism from die hard fans. The deal will see £105 million of the debt tied to the club.
A number of Premiership sides have been took over in the past few years. In other major leagues in Germany and Spain for example clubs are simply not for sale. They are owned by many thousands of "member fans". Such arrangements have proved successful and in the last 15 years the UEFA Champions League has been won on 6 occasions with such clubs.
