After the failure of match officials to award Fulham their equalizer against Middlesbrough at the weekend the FA are researching new goal line technology. The blunder led to Fulham slipping to a 2-1 defeat despite David Healy scoring a late equalizer which was disallowed. Video replays show that despite Mark Schwarzer’s best efforts the ball clearly crossed the goal line. Despite this referee Andy D’Urso and his assistant did not award the goal.

A similar incident occurred elsewhere as Southampton were disallowed a goal against Norwich City. Southampton slumped to a similar 2-1 defeat. After 2 blunders which effectively cost clubs the game the FA claim they are now keen to explore introducing goal line technology. In recent months there have been trials for technology which instantly alerts referees if the ball crosses the line. Such a system would require approval from ruling body FIFA before being implemented in the UK leagues.
