Estonia 0-3 EnglandDavid Beckham turned messiah for Steve McClaren as England won its Euro 2008 qualifying match against Estonia with a comfortable margin of 3-0.
Beckham, playing in his first competitive match for England since the World Cup, just showed what McClaren was missing ever since he snubbed him after he took over the reins as England coach. The 32-year old midfielder posed a consistent threat for Estonia through set pieces as well as firing his trademark crosses, setting up two goals in the process.
McClaren made three changes to the side that drew with Brazil during the friendly on Friday. As expected Peter Crouch was named in the line up instead of Alan Smith in order to utilize Beckham's prowess in crossing the ball into the penalty area.
Wes Brown was named ahead of Jaime Carragher as right back while Wayne Bridge replaced Nicky Shorey, even though the Reading defender had done well on his debut against Brazil. Joe Cole opened the scoring for the hosts in the 36th minute when he smashed home a Crouch flick-on from Wayne Bridge's throw-in.
Stung by the goal, the hosts pressed forward were nearly rewarded just seconds before half time, Vladimir Voskoboinikov dallied past Ledley King and John Terry only for Paul Robinson to block his effort. Relieved to hear the halftime whistle, England came back strongly into the second half and bagged two goals in space of seven minutes.
David Beckham curled his trademark cross into the penalty area and Crouch had no problems reaching it and heading home England's second goal of the game in the 53rd minute. Beckham once again turned provider at the stroke of the hour, this time Michael Owen taking advantage of the ex-captain's accuracy to tap in a simple goal to score his 23rd competitive goal for his country.
Beckham, now badly hobbling due to an ankle injury, was replaced Kieron Dyer in the 67th minute. Estonia nearly got one back in the injury time, but Terry was alert to the danger and cleared the ball off the line. Peter Crouch managed to get himself booked in the 81st minute, which will see the lanky striker, miss England's crucial qualifier match against Israel in September. Estonia v England put the 3 lions back on the map with a deserved 3-0 win. Tags: David Beckham, England, Euro 2008 qualifying, Estonia, Estonia v England Posted: |
