Estonia 0 - 1 CroatiaEstonia continued to make heavy weather of their Euro 2008 campaign as they slipped to a 0-1 loss to Croatia in Tallinn on June 2. Estonia battled hard, but were unable to make any impression on the Croatia team as Brazilian-born Eduardo da Silva ensured the visitors came away with three points.
Slaven Bilic's side needed a win after Russia trounced Andorra 4-0 in an earlier match on the day. Croatia were leading Group E before this game and a win was a must to retain the top spot on the leaderboard. However Croatia were unable to break the deadlock in the initial minutes of the first half as Estonia played a tough game in front of their home crowd.
Croatian keeper Stipe Pletikosa needed to be on high alert in those opening minutes as his goal was threatened more than once by the advancing Estonia team. Konstantin Vassiljev tested his reflexes early on with a fine header from Vladimir Voskoboinikov's cross. It was a scrappy 20 minutes in the first half as much of the game was played in the midfield.
Vassiljev tested Pletikosa once again this time with an in swinging corner, but the Croatia keeper was alert enough to parry the ball away. Thereafter Raio Piiroja fired a close range header, but was again denied by the goalkeeper. Just after the half hour mark, Eduardo put the visitors ahead with a superb shot taken on the turn. Although Estonia goalkeeper Mart Poom got a hand to it, he was unable to prevent the ball from going in. This was the NK Dinamo Zagreb striker's sixth goal in the Euro 2008 qualifiers.
After the break, Estonia failed to penetrate a stout Croatia defense. Ragnar Klavan tested Pletikosa again with a header, but the Croatia keeper showed good reflexes to deny the goal.
The win keeps Croatia on top of Group E with 16 points from six games, while Estonia are on zero points from six games. Croatia clash with Russia on June 6, while Estonia take on England on the same day. Estonia v Croatia ended with an away win 1-0.
