Eriksson joins the interview listAfter Glenn Roeder resigned as manager at the weekend; Newcastle United are on the lookout for a replacement. Glenn Roeder spent 15 months at the Premiership club before resigning after an emergency board meeting. For many fans and players alike Roeder’s successor was a one horse race. With Sam Allardyce recently leaving Bolton many expected him to take up the position at St James Park. However, today a number of names have been added to the list of hopefuls including Sven Goran Eriksson and Gerrard Houllier. The bookies stopped taking bets on the appointment of a new manager at Newcastle United as Sam Allardyce seemed the only candidate for the job. However with rumours of Eriksson and Houllier’s interest the new appointment is no longer a one horse race. A local Newcastle radio station ran a poll on the new post and Eriksson came in top. The former England manager has not been in action since last years world cup but has experience in top flight football. Gerrard Houllier is currently at Lyon but has expressed an interest in a return to the English Premier League. Former Newcastle and England boss Bobby Robson sat alongside Newcastle chief Shepherd during Saturday's defeat by Blackburn, which became Roeder's last game in charge of the Magpies. The former manager currently battling lung cancer refused to speculate on likely successors. However, the local legend did urge fans to unite behind whoever the club chooses in order to help the team move forward.Tags: Newcastle United, Bolton, English Premier League Posted: |
