Elano Calls For More Protection

Brazil star Elano believes referees are too lenient when it comes to punishing dangerous tackles in the World Cup.

The former Manchester City midfielder almost suffered a serious injury after a reckless challenge by Cheik Tiote during Brazil’s 3-1 victory over the Ivory Coast.

Tiote escaped a red card but Elano, who sustained a shin injury which is not as bad as first thought, feels officials must do more to protect players.

He said: "I forgive as I am not a player that feels remorse but I believe referees should be much tougher. In this case the foul was committed close to where the official was."

Elano scored his second goal of the tournament against the African side before being stretchered off, but he should be available for the knockout phase of the tournament.
