Drogba collects awardFor the last 3 seasons Arsenal’s Thierry Henry has picked up the golden boot award in the English Premier League. The French striker has taken the Premiership by storm since his arrival at the London club with dazzling skills and impressive goal tallies. However, in a season dogged by injury the award has been passed on for the first time in 3 seasons. It is passed on for the first time since 2001 (Hasselbank) to a Chelsea player. For the 2006-07 season of the English Premier league the golden boot award was awarded to Didier Drogba following a great season in which he notched up a total of 20 goals. In addition to the award the 29 year old Chelsea star also received money to donate to a charity of his choice. Second place in the goal tally was Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy. The striker notched up 18 goals 1 more than third place man Cristiano Ronaldo who scored 17. Ronaldo has had an amazing season and without doubt has established himself as one of the best players in the world. While he failed to win the golden boot award – not an easy task for a midfielder – this season he has picked up a host of other awards. Sir Alex Ferguson has tipped the young Portugese international to become the best player in the world, an opinion also shared by United striker Wayne Rooney. Ronaldo completed a full sweep of awards this season in the English Premier League. He claimed both PFA awards, a Football Writer’s Association award and was named earlier in the week by United fans and players as the player of the year. In addition to his goal tally in the English Premier League Cristiano Ronaldo also notched up a further 6 goals in other competitions. Last summer Ronaldo’s future at Manchester United and in English football looked doubtful as he played a part in the dismissal of Wayne Rooney from the World Cup 2006 quarter final. However, he has gone from strength to strength since the controversy and has been a key component in helping Manchester United claim the title. Watch out for him also at the weekend in the FA Cup Final as Manchester United take on Chelsea both looking for a season double.Tags: English Premier League, FA Cup Final, Manchester United Posted: |
