Diego Forlan - UruguayDiego Forlan’s match-winning brace in this season’s Europa League final against Fulham rounded off another successful season for the Athletico Madrid striker. Forlan has been a regular scorer for club and country, bar a difficult period in the EPL at Manchester United. He was Uruguay’s top scorer with seven in their 2010 qualifiers, which saw them squeak past Costa Rica in a play-off to guarantee a place in South Africa. ![]() Forlan’s goals included a hat-trick against Peru and a stoppage-time penalty winner in Ecuador in their penultimate qualifier, which ultimately saw Uruguay edge Ecuador out of the play-off spot. Forlan has scored 23 international goals in 63 appearances since making his Uruguay debut shortly before the 2002 World Cup finals. At the 2002 finals he scored a spectacular volley in a remarkable 3-3 draw against Senegal in the group stages. His club career took him from Argentina’s Independiente and United (both nicknamed the Red Devils) to prolific spells in Spain’s La Liga with Villareal and Athletico Madrid, for whom he has scored more than a goal every two games.
