Denmark 0-3 SwedenThe UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body has ruled that Sweden has won the abandoned match against Denmark 3-0, taking the Scandinavian country to the top of its group table in the race to qualify for Euro 2008 championships.
The committee has also directed the Danish Football Association to pay a fine of €61,000 for the security lapse that occurred during the match and has said that the national team should play the next four matches at least 250KM away from Copenhagen.
The match started on a high tempo, with Sweden taking the lead as early as in the 7th minute when Johan Elmander latched on to a mistake by Michael Gravgaard to put the ball past Thomas Sørensen into the net. Stung by the goal, Denmark tried to respond. Daniel Jensen had his effort on goal saved comfortably by keeper Andreas Isaksson in the 21st minute.
However it was Sweden who scored the second goal of the match, when Petter Hansson's free kick attempt from the edge of the penalty area settled into the top-right corner of the net in the 23rd minute. 2-0 became 3-0 two minutes later when Elmander scored his second goal of the match. The Toulouse FC reached a Christian Wilhelmsson cross from the right wing before firing home the ball from close range.
Denmark got one back in the 34th minute when Daniel Agger took possession of the loose ball following Gravgaard's header and the Liverpool defender made no mistake in slotting home the ball with his left foot. Coach Morten Olsen tried to change things around by bringing on Leon Andreasen to replace Jan Kristiansen in the 35th minute.
Sweden continued to press forward and nearly scored a fourth through Fredrik Ljungberg, but the Arsenal midfielder's effort was blocked by Sørensen. Denmark went into the second half with a huge task in front of them if they were to get back into the match.
Olsen made his second change of the game at the start of the second half, replacing Thomas Kahlenberg with Nicklas Bendtner. The move paid dividends 15 minutes later when Bendtner headed the ball into the path of Jon Dahl Tomasson, who made no mistake in scoring Denmark's second goal from close range.
Bendtner turned provider for the second time in the 75th minute, crossing the ball to Andreasen who smashed home a screamer from outside into the bottom corner of the net to complete a remarkable comeback by Denmark.
Both sides traded chances for the rest of the game, without ever coming close to taking the lead. Just when it looked like both the teams will have to share the points, a moment of madness from Christian Poulsen ruined the game for Denmark. Denmark v Sweden may have seen a remarkable comeback for the home team. However, the game was ruled in Sweden’s favour due to the events below.
The Sevilla midfielder punched Markus Rosenberg in the final minute of normal time and referee Herbert Fandel had no option but to award a penalty for Sweden. This did not sit well with a Danish fan and he ran onto to the pitch and tried to punch the referee, who was pulled away by Danish players. Fandel called off the match, leaving the decision to UEFA's disciplinary committee.
Poulsen has been handed a three-match ban, which will see him miss matches against Sweden and Liechtenstein in September. UEFA has given three days to the Danish Football Association to appeal against the decision taken by the committee.
The win leaves Sweden at the top of the table, with 18 points from 7 matches, three more than second-placed Spain, who won both their matches against Latvia and Liechtenstein. Tags: Sweden, Denmark, Euro 2008 championships, Denmark v Sweden Posted: |
