Denisov Turns Down National Squad
FC Zenit St.Petersburg's UEFA Cup final champion Igor Denisov has said no to a chance to join Russias Provivisonal squad for UEFA Euro 2008 as preperations begin for the tournament. Denisov, a Midfielder, scored Zenits first goal in their 2-0 viectory over Rangers FC in Manchester last week. But even before that, Russia coach Guus Hiddink had interest in him. "We spoke to Zenit's coaching staff about him a few days before the UEFA Cup final, but they asked us not to mention his name in order to keep him focused on the match."
Denisov said no after the final though, and the Dutch coach says it's a pity but he respects Denisov's decision.
"Every player is free to decide whether he will play for the national team or not. It's disappointing he is not with us, but it's not a problem for me because I like working with those who want to be here." Tags: Igor Denisov, Euro 2008, Russia, Guus Hiddink Posted: |
