Coaching Merry-go-round To Continue

The frenetic pace of coaching hirings and firings looks set to continue in the wake of eight teams’ exits from the African Nations Cup this week.

French newspaper reports have suggested that Tunisia’s Faouzi Benzarti is under most immediate threat. And Burkina Faso’s Juan Duarte is pondering his future after the Burkinabes’ goalless departure from Angola.

Meanwhile, Cote D’Ivoire coach Vahid Halilhodzic has called for African federations to place more faith in their coaches.

Reports in France Football have linked former Nantes “tactician” Elie Baup with discussions about replacing Benzarti, whose team were shaded out of the quarter-finals despite being unbeaten.

He has reportedly been contacted by the Tunisian Football Federation, although he indicated that he had received similar promptings from Morocco. Asked whether he would consider the Tunisian job, Baup said: “Why not?”

Duarte is believed to have received offers from a Tunisian club as well as the Mali international job, seemingly vacant after coach Stephen Keshi’s “I’m open to offers” statement on Tuesday.

His contract expires in April. But he noted that “to best combine family life with work, it is better to be a national coach.”

Halilhodzic, meanwhile, claimed African teams “don’t trust the coaches. If you win, the coach doesn’t exist (but) lose one game and you’re fired.”

Perhaps insensitively, given the Togolese pre-tournament tragedy, he added: “After we drew 0-0 with Burkina Faso, I had the feeling people were looking at me like I was a terrorist.”
