Chelsea claim double90,000 fans inside the new Wembley stadium were treated to a fantastic build up to the 2007 FA Cup Final. While the display was impressive the actual match failed to excite. The FA Cup Final was decided by only 1 goal as Didier Drogba scored late in extra time to bring the trophy home to Chelsea. Chelsea have now won each of the domestic competitions in the last 3 years and have claimed a double during the course of this season. Didier Drogba produced a moment of brilliance to secure the match in a tie which ultimately failed to deliver. Penalties were looming as it seemed the 2 teams would draw for the third time this season. However, Drogba interchanged a slick one-two with Frank Lampard before netting past Edwin van der Sar. Ryan Giggs missed a good chance to put Manchester United ahead in normal time an incident which also added controversy to the game. Drogba’s goal prevented a third successive FA Cup Final progressing to penalties and was well taken by the Golden Boot winner to cap a great season with a crucial goal. Chelsea have now finished a disappointing season on a high and add the FA Cup to the League Cup, which they won earlier this season. The result grabs the headlines which have long been littered with speculation not just regarding the manager’s future but also that of key players. Last season Jose Mourinho tossed his Premiership medal into the crowd at Stamford Bridge. This season he will be clinging to his FA Cup medal as it is the first he has claimed at the club. The Chelsea manager paid tribute to his player’s following the slender victory and stated that he would still be with the club next season. Chelsea captain and England international John Terry said the FA Cup Final victory will be the lift and foothold the club needs to reclaim their Premiership title next season. By signing off on a high the club know what is required of them next season and have the summer break to prepare. Tags: FA Cup Final, Chelsea, Manchester United, League Cup Posted: |
