Chelsea have been hit with a double injury blow ahead of the second leg of their Champions League semi final with Liverpool. Ballack and Carvalho picked up separate injuries during 2 weekends of football ruling them both out for the midweek tie. Ballack underwent ankle surgery on Friday after picking up an injury during the goalless draw with Newcastle last weekend. 28 year old defender Carvalho picked up a knee problem in the draw against Newcastle.

Ballack travelled back to his home country for an operation in Munich where he was attended by the national doctor of the German team. Ballack who has scored 8 goals since a summer signing is now ruled out for the rest of the season.

Chelsea have replacements for both positions but they are second choice behind Ballack and Carvalho. After poor weekend form Chelsea will want to raise their game ahead of their midweek clash where they carry a 1 goal lead.
