Carthage Eagles Fail To Take Off But Chipolopolo And Lions Are Indomitable
There were victories for Zambia and Cameroon but dismal defeat for Tunisia in the final series of warm-up matches before the ACN gets underway in Luanda this evening. The competing nations have all sought to focus on the football after the tragic events surrounding the Togolese team. And despite their status among the tournament outsiders, Zambia produced Saturday’s most eye-catching result. The Chipolopolo followed up an earlier victory over Mozambique by beating South Korea 4-2 in Johannesburg in preparation for the African Nations Cup. They led 2-1 at the break, with early goals from Felix Katongo and Rainsford Kalaba, before Kim Jung-woo pulled a goal back ten minutes before the break. The Zambians were 4-1 up with twenty minutes left thanks to James Chamanga on the hour mark and Noel Chivuta. South Korea’s consolation came from Koo Ja-cheol. Torment in Tunis for Zambia’s opening opponents Tunisia as fledgling coach Faouzi Benzarti’s side went 2-0 down to Gambia before Amine Chermiti scored a goal which was too late to be anything more than a consolation. Goals either side of half-time from Achille Webo set Cameroon up for a victorious send-off from their Kenyan training tour in Kasarani. They went behind to a 20th minute goal from the host nation’s midfielder James Situma before Webo’s decisive intervention. Mohammadou Idrissou made it 3-1 in the 58th minute, which completed the scoring, and Cameroon’s first ever win over the Harambee Stars.
