Capello Knows His Men – AlmostEngland boss Fabio Capello announced that he knows his squad for the World Cup, or at least the first 20 names in it. After naming a changed starting eleven the friendly against Japan, the Italian confessed that all but three of the seats on the plane to travel to South Africa were booked.
Following the 3-1 win over Mexico, several players gave themselves every chance of making the final cut but with Darren Bent and Tom Huddlestone being handed starts against the Japanese while Gareth Barry fights for fitness, there are others who will wonder whether they can go ahead and book their summer holidays after all.
Stephen Warnock of Aston Villa and West Ham’s Scott Parker were perhaps outsiders for a plane ticket to begin with. However, their respective club colleagues Emile Heskey and Matthew Upson are still uncertain of their places and when Joe Cole, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Tottenham’s Michael Dawson, none of whom featured at Wembley, are also considered, some big names are far from guaranteed to travel.
Aaron Lennon will also be given a chance to shine in Austria whilst John Terry, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand are all scheduled to start which should put to rest any fitness concerns that remain about the players. Lennon impressed in a cameo appearance against Japan as with Theo Walcott starting alongside him, the other player with everything to prove should he be given the chance from the bench is Manchester City’s Adam Johnson.
David James comes in between the posts as he bids to establish himself as Capello’s first choice. Decent performances from Robert Green and Joe Hart in what was a goal keeping game of two halves last week has made the decision as to who starts in goal against the USA on June 12th possibly his most difficult.
