Bundesliga Update Feb 2011

Borussia Dortmund tightened their grip on the Bundesliga as their closest rivals now have to make up a twelve point gap. Borussia Monchengladbach saw daylight open up at the bottom as they were the only side in the bottom five not to pick up any points at the weekend.

The leaders opened the scoring at Bayern Munich courtesy of Barrios but the hosts drew level when Dias found the het shortly afterwards. However, Sahin struck only a couple of minutes to restore Dortmund’s lead and Hummel’s strike on the hour sealed the points. The defeat was a further blow to Munich’s Champions League ambitions.

Bayer Leverkusen remain second but will be disappointed after throwing away a two goal lead at Bremen. Goals either side of half time from Derdivok and Rolfes looked to have grabbed all three points but a Kiessling own goal ten minutes from time gave hope to Werder and Prodl snatched a point in injury time.

Hannover 96 also left it late but an 89th minute Schulz goal was enough to claim the spoils at mid-table St Pauli. Mainz made up ground on Munich with a 2-1 win on the road at TSG Hoffenheim. Ivanschitz gave the visitors the lead a quarter of the way through the match but when Alaba equalised with less than ten minutes remaining it looked like the points would be shared. But Elkin Soto struck inside the last five minutes to keep Mainz very much in the hunt for European football next season.

Borussia Monchengladbach lost at struggling Wolfsburg and a brace from Diego did their survival chances no harm. VfB Stuttgart dragged Eintracht Frankfurt right back into the fight as two second half goals from Harnik and Hajnal gave the visitors the points. A Hlousek opener for Kaiserslautern was cancelled out by Jansen’s 55th minute score for Hamburg but the point could be vital for both teams in their respective battles for survival and a European spot.
