Bohs in Euro heartbreak

Irish side Bohemians suffered heartbreak in the Champions League second round qualifiers as Patrick Jezek headed home an 86th minute winner for Red Bull Salzburg on Wednesday.

Having held the Austrian champions to a 1-1 draw in the first-leg, it looked as if Bohs’ priceless away goal was going to be enough to claim a famous victory over Giovanni Trapattoni’s former club at Dalymount Park. But with just four minutes to go, Jezek pounced on a Mark Rossiter mistake to send a header over stranded keeper Brian Murphy as Salzburg snatched a 2-1 aggregate triumph.

Elsewhere, Northern Irish champions Glentoran were taught another lesson by Israeli side Maccabi Haifa, losing 4-0 on the night and 10-0 on aggregate.

Welsh outfit Rhyl fared even worse in Serbia against Partizan Belgrade as they got thumped 8-0, to make it 12-0 over two legs.

To lift the gloom of Bohemians’ last-gasp defeat, on Thursday fellow League of Ireland sides Derry City, who knocked out Gretna and IFK Gothenburg in the Uefa Cup three years ago, and St Patrick’s Athletic progressed to the next round of the Europa League with 2-1 aggregate wins over Latvia’s Skonto Riga and Malta’s Valletta respectively.

Scotland’s representatives in the Europa League had a mixed night, with Falkirk suffering an embarrassing extra-time defeat to Liechenstein cup winners Vaduz, but Motherwell are safely through to the next qualifying round after overcoming a 1-0 deficit to ease to an 8-2 aggregate win over Albania’s Flamurtari.

Meanwhile, Wales’ last European representative for this season Bangor lost 3-0 on aggregate to Finnish outfit FC Honka.
