Belgium v Portugal
Belgium will be facing Portugal in a key Euro 2008 qualifying match, the result of which could determine its hope of making it to the Euro 2008 finals next year. A win will keep the country’s hopes afloat, while a loss almost certainly sees them out of contention.
Under-21 internationals Faris Haroun and Jan Vertonghen might get their debut after receiving the call-up ahead of a crucial week for the national team. Belgium face Portugal in Brussels on June 2, and then move to Helsinki on June 6 to face Finland. Belgium will be without the services of Vincent Kompany and Peter Van der Heyden.
With just seven points in six matches, Belgium is in fifth position in their group. Portugal crushed Belgium 4-0 in the first leg of the qualifying round in March. The team welcomes back captain Timmy Simons, who was suspended for the previous match and hopes to turn things around.
Meanwhile Portugal are without four key players for the June 2 fixture. Simão, Nuno Gomes and Ricardo Carvalho are out injured while Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for the game. Portugal is fighting out with Serbia and Finland for the second spot, with all the three teams on 11 points in six games played. Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has called-up three new faces including Bruno Alves, Bosingwa and Duda.
"All of the new players are making interesting progress at their clubs and we would like to see them perform in the national squad. We have some injuries and Ronaldo suspended so I thought this was the right time to bring in new players", Scolari said.
Portugal then face Kuwait in a friendly on June 5.
