Beckenbauer backs German refereesBayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has defended German officials after a recent tirade from Bundesliga players and coaches. The man dubbed ‘Der Kaiser’ supported referees after a number of controversial decisions this weekend in the Bundesliga which led to numerous outbursts from players and staff, including former Arsenal keeper Jens Lehman, who told press that he may as well retired due to the standard of refereeing in Germany. Beckenbauer told press:“It is terrible to see these pictures of players, trainers, substitutes all criticising the decisions of the referee. “It has got a lot to do with decency. The referee is in a very difficult situation.” Beckenbauer went on to criticise the Bundesliga in comparison to top European Leagues such as the Premiership or La Liga by stating “People there seem to be able to behave.” Referee Jochen Drees also claimed more respect is needed for officials after the German came under attack from Borussia Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp before sending off Robert Kovac after the final whistle for continuous complaining and insulting language.
