Battle At Blackburn Crucial For Blues
Birmingham City will be hoping to complete a league double of victories over Lancastrian opposition when they travel to Blackburn Rovers for EPL points this Saturday, after their 2-1 win over Bolton Wanderers last weekend.
Goals from veteran striker Kevin Phillips and Craig Gardner, allied to a superb display of shot-stopping from Blues custodian Ben Foster, gave the Blues a vital victory which leaves them two points clear of the EPL’s relegation zone.
The win came as a boost for the Blues after the announcement of more disappointing financial results which showed that the club lost £5.2m in the six months to December 31st 2010.
Saturday’s opponents Blackburn have the same points and goal difference as Birmingham and the importance of the fixture is lost on no-one at St Andrews, least of all the scorer of what proved to be last Saturday’s winner, Craig Gardner.
The midfielder, Blues’ joint top scorer with eight goals, told the Birmingham Mail: “We’ve gone up to 14th but you see all the teams below us and they are on the same points or there’s one point difference.
“So we need to keep going. We need to get three or four more wins. And you can see the fire in the eyes in the changing rooms. The lads want it, the gaffer wants it – we all want it.”
The club offered no comment on its finances, as its parent company, Birmingham International Holdings, announced the losses in a statement to Hong Kong’s stock exchange last week.
