Azerbaijan 1-3 Poland

Poland established a firm grip on the top spot in Group A with a resounding 1-3 win away to Azerbaijan in Baku. Branimir Subašić stunned Poland and perhaps himself with a great strike on six minutes to put Azerbaijan ahead on June 2. Artur Boruc in the Poland goal had no chance of stopping the wonderful shot as Baku celebrated in a vociferous manner.

Poland were subdued for most of the first half and it was looking like the group leaders had given up on the game in the first 45 minutes itself. Khagani Mamedov had a golden chance to double Azerbaijan's lead in the first 20 minutes, but Boruc was alert to parry the shot off.

Leo Beenhakker's side finally woke up after 20 minutes when Smolarek unleashed a fierce shot from a free-kick only to find it hit the wall. Smolarek had another chance just minutes later, but was unable to find the target from Krzynówek corner. His close range shot was blocked off by Emin Imamaliev and Azerbaijan maintained their lead.

Ilgar Gurbanov had a golden chance to extend Azerbaijan’s lead, but his shot was too high. After the break Poland came into their own and on 63 minutes leveled the game with a Ebi Smolarek header. The provider was Jacek Krzynówek, whose free-kick was a perfectly taken set piece.

After this Poland dictated the terms with Jacek Krzynówek increasing their lead on 66 minutes despite the fact that Farkhad Veliyev in the Azerbaijan goal had affected a fine save. Krzynówek gleefully pounced on the rebound to give Poland a 1-2 lead. Abbasov and Ilgar Gurbanov tried to restore parity for the Azerbaijan team, but were thwarted by fine goalkeeping from Boruc.

Krzynówek was on hand again in the 90th minute as Poland ensured full points from the game with a third goal. Krzynówek scored off a clinical Marek Saganowski cross to ensure Poland retained their top spot in Group A.

Poland remain on top of Group A with 19 points from 8 matches, while Azerbaijan are at the bottom with four points from seven games. Azerbaijan play Kazakhstan on June 6. Azerbaijan v Poland finished 1-3.
