History

Australia first qualified to the World Cup back in 1974 but failed to score a single goal and managed to collect just one point from their three group games. After a long absence, the Socceroos once again qualified back in 2006 when they beat Japan and held Croatia to a draw to progress to the knockout stage where they went out of the competition thanks to a controversial goal by eventual champions Italy.

2010 World Cup

Australia started their qualification campaign in the Asian Football Confederation and had to fight hard to qualify out of the third round. However the fourth qualifying round was easy sailing for Australia who won four of the six games and remained unbeaten to secure a place in the World Cup.

Key Players

Coach Pim Verbeek has picked a number of youth players in his 30-man provisional squad including James Holland, Nikita Rukavytsya, Shane Lowry, Tommy Oar and Dario Vidosic. However the fitness of Harry Kewell and Mark Bresciano will be the key to Australia’s hopes of progressing out of a tough group.
