Atletico warn fans not to travel to Marseille

Atletico Madrid have asked supporters not to travel to Marseille for their sides upcoming UEFA Champions League fixture, after trouble flared in the club’s last meeting.

Madrid have not asked for any tickets for the match and are hoping to avoid any confrontation this time around after Los Colchoneros were forced to play PSV behind closed doors in Europe when trouble erupted during Marseille’s visit to the Vicente Calderón in October.

According to rumours in the Spanish media, l’OM supporters are looking to take revenge in France and there are even sections of Atletico supporters ready to respond.

Marseille themselves have been charged by Uefa after Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was struck by a missile thrown from the away section during the French side's 1-0 defeat at Anfield.

Enrique Cerezo told fans: "The club asks all its fans to not travel to the French city because sufficient security guarantees cannot be given to the standard that we would like and that could lead to unforeseen things happening.

As a consequence, the club has decided not to ask Marseille for any tickets for away fans."

Atletico de Madrid recently overcame PSV Eindhoven 2-1 to progress to the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League, despite having no supporters in the Vicente Calderon stadium.
