Atletico Madrid have given thier backing to under-fire coach Javier Aguirre ahead of their clash with Deportivo La Coruna at the Vicente Calderon tomorrow.

Atletico Madrid fans have called for Aguirre to be sacked, especially after this week’s 0-0 Copa del Rey tie with Segunda B Group 3 minnows Orihuela. Atletico have also only managed two wins from their last nine matches in all competitions.

The 0-0 draw was enough for Atletico to progress to the next round, but the final whistle was met by a chorus of boos from the home crowd.

 

Aguirre told press: "I accept it. The fans came here to see goals and we could only draw 0-0. The best thing is qualification for the next round. Orihuela was a worthy opponent and put us under pressure until the end."

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo told press "I have never had any doubts in Aguirre. He has had his good games and his bad games, but I hope we can get back to where we were at the start of the season," he said.

"The alarm bells ring when you have a bad run. The alarm bells are ringing here not because the coach's job is under threat but because of the team's poor performances.

"The team haven't played well. They have created lots of chances but haven't put them away, unfortunately. I can understand why the fans get frustrated. But if we get a couple of wins in a row, they'll get back behind Aguirre again."
