Atletico MadridAtletico remain top of Uefa Champions League Group D after a 2-1 win over French side Marseille at the Vicente Calderon. Sergio Aguero took just four minutes to put the home side in front, before Mamadou Niang equalised for the French side on 16 minutes. Raul Garcia then restored Atletico’s lead after 22 minutes and the goal proved to be the match winner when neither side could finish off a number of chances throughout the rest of the game. Madrid now sit level on points with Liverpool, who they face next in Group D. Atletico Madrid were on the receiving end of 6-1 thrashing from a magical Barcelona performance. Rafael Marquez, Samuel Eto’o and Lionel Messi all scored within the first 8 minutes in an incredible night at the Nou Camp. Maxi Rodriguez then gave Los Colchoneros some hope of a comeback before Eto’o, Eidur Gudjohnsen made it 5-1 after 28 minutes. The game then became relatively quiet until Thierry Henry added Barca’s sixth of the night on 78 minutes; and it was a night to forget for any Atletico fan.
In other news, Atletico Madrid are confident of staging their upcoming Uefa Champions League tie against Liverpool, after Uefa ordered the Madrid club to play their next two games away from the Vicente Calderon Stadium due to crowd trouble. This meant that the game was to be held in a neutral venue at least 200 miles away from Madrid, to the anger of thousands of travelling Liverpool fans who had already booked transport arrangements. Atletico have until 1100 BST on Friday to appeal the ban as Uefa hope to reach an agreement that will satisfy all parties. Although the ban is almost certain to stay, likely options may include beginning the ban after the Liverpool game or staging the tie in the Madrid area.
