Arsene’s Gallic ShrugArsenal boss Arsene Wenger has refused to write off his side’s title aspirations despite their failure to press home a 1-0 lead at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday. An Emmanuel Adebayor header gave the Gunners an early lead but it was former Emirates favourite Jeremie Aliadiere whose bullet header from a Tuncay cross not only brought Boro level but also gave them hope that they could even grab all 3 points. And but for a poor decision on what looked a valid penalty claim the might just have sneaked it as well despite Arsenal dominating for long periods. The Gunners current inability to finish off seemingly lesser opponents must be a major concern for the Frenchman. His continued belief in his rebuilding of the North London squad as a youth-filled force needs to filter through to the players on the pitch. Wenger’s admission that ’no-one believes in us’ can hardly be seen as a glowing admission of success but support inside the club remains strong for the long-term strategy that the manager is pursuing. The further comment indicating that confidence is not at an all time high at present is something that he will hope not to have to repeat for the remainder of the season. With names such as Fabregas and Van Persie, not to mention Adebayor and a host of young talent paraded in the Carling Cup campaign, the potential is undeniable. What is still under question is whether that potential can be translated into actual success on the pitch. Yet with a record like Arsene Wenger, who would bet against him?
