Arsenal Keep Going On Four Fronts

Arsenal still remain the only EPL team still in with a chance of complete a unique quadruple of trophies, after their FA Cup fourth round success over League One side Huddersfield Town and their Carling Cup semi-final victory over Championship outfit Ipswich Town.

But their recent progress has not been without controversy. Their FA Cup victory came courtesy of a hotly-disputed late penalty.

And abusive language accusations have been levelled against captain Cesc Fabregas during their 2-1 EPL win over Everton this midweek.

Manager Arsene Wenger was certainly outspoken in his comments about the transfer activity of EPL title holders Chelsea, querying the logic of their recent spending spree.

The win over Huddersfield came at a cost as influential French midfielder Samir Nasri pulled up with a hamstring injury during the first-half of the 2-1 victory.

The 23-year-old looks set to be out for up to three weeks, making him a serious doubt for the Gunners’ Champions League second round first leg against Catalan giants Barcelona on 16th February.

Wenger said: “Nasri looks to have a serious hamstring injury. Usually it is three weeks (but) we have to see if it is a grade one. If so, it will be two weeks, so we will see.”

Arsenal won the tie with an 86th-minute penalty, converted by Fabregas after Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner fell over in the penalty area.

And Fabregas was more central to the Everton controversy, after being accused by Toffees boss David Moyes of making comments to referee Lee Mason at half-time which “100% warranted a sending-off” after Mason erroneously allowed Everton’s goal to stand.

But Wenger denied that Fabregas had spoken to the referee at all about the incident. And the FA will take no action as Mason did not include the incident in his report.

Arsenal’s transfer window activity was traditionally low-key, with the main move being Mexican striker Carlos Vela’s loan to EPL side West Bromwich Albion.

And Wenger called into question Chelsea’s transfer business, saying: “(Chelsea) supported the financial fair play (Uefa’s new regulations limiting club spending).

“But in the morning they announce a £70m loss, and in the afternoon they buy £75m worth of players. Where is the logic in that?”

Arsenal travel to Newcastle United in the EPL this coming Saturday, anxious to avenge Newcastle’s 1-0 win at the Emirates, thanks to a goal from the now-departed Andy Carroll, earlier this season.
