Armenia 1 - 0 PolandPoland were brought down to Earth in their Group A Euro 2008 qualifier against Armenia at the Republican Stadium as they slipped to a 1-0 loss. The defeat meant an end to the impressive six-match winning streak by Poland although it made no difference to their position at the top of the table.
The Group A leaders began the game on a sedate pace and chances were few and far between in the first half. The game appeared to come to life mid-way through the first 45 minutes when Robert Arzumanyan of Armenia had a decent header on goal from a corner, only to splay it wide off the far post.
Poland woke up after this and responded almost immediately as Marek Saganowski tested the Armenia keeper Gevorg Kasparov, who affected a wonderful save. Just after this Jacek Krzynówek tested the keeper again with a well directed free-kick, which Kasparov managed to tip over.
Wojciech Łobodziński nearly put Poland into the lead with a well driven low shot, which the Armenia keeper could only parry. However Saganowski could not take his chance in front of an open goal. Leo Beenhakker's team were getting increasingly frustrated and that frustration came to the fore in the second half when Armenia broke the deadlock on the 64th minute.
Poland defender Jacek Bak brought down Aram Hakobyan just outside the area and Hamlet Mkhitaryan gratefully ensured that the resulting free-kick was utilized to the full as he deposited the ball into the top-left corner of the net. Poland goalkeeper Artur Boruc was unable to prevent the ball from crossing over much to the joy of the home fans.
Jakub Blaszczykowski tested Armenia keeper Kasparov once again in the 86th minute, but the keeper was well on the button and staved off these late attempts.
Poland maintain the top spot in Group A despite the loss with 19 points from nine games, while Armenia are on the sixth spot with seven points from seven games. Armenia v Poland ended with a 1-0 away win. Tags: Poland, Euro 2008 qualifier, Armenia, Armenia v Poland Posted: |
