Argentina Live - 2010 World Cup
Diego Maradona will look to join the rare breed of sportsmen who have won the football World Cup both as player and coach with the Argentine national team this summer. Watch Argentina live at the 2010 Football World Cup by using your exclusive membership with the Live Sport Network. Argentina reached the quarterfinals of the last World Cup before going out on penalties to hosts Germany. They had a less than impressive qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup and just about managed to secure an automatic qualifying spot and avoid the playoffs. This Argentina side is blessed with talent, especially in the attacking department. Maradona has an embarrassment of riches to choose from upfront, with nearly all his players starting regularly for their respective clubs. In their ranks, they have Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, considered by many to be the best player on the planet currently. Also present are Real Madrid’s prolific forward Gonzalo Higuain, hard working Man City striker Carlos Tevez, exciting Napoli youngster Ezequiel Lavezzi and Inter Milan’s Diego Milito. Maradona has never been one to be far away from attracting controversy and has already drawn criticism from several quarters for his selection policies. Midfielder Esteban Cambiasso and attacking right back Javier Zanetti, both important players in Inter’s Scudetto winning team, have not managed to find a place in Maradona’s short list. Also absent is Higuain’s Real Madrid teammate Fernando Gago. With playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme having fallen out with Maradona, more responsibility will have to be shouldered by former Man United and Lazio medio Juan Sebastian Veron. Argentina’s backline looks pretty solid with Walter Samuel, Martin Demichelis and co. present in it. How far will the Albicelestes go at the World Cup under Maradona’s tutelage?
