Aragones had a rift with Torres??

A 4-1 victory in a team’s opening game at the Euro 2008 should mean that everything is going well within the team’s camp, but it is not so with Spain.

Reports have come in that a rift has developed between Coach Luis Aragones and his star striker, Fernando Torres.

Torres was brought off after just 54 minutes, and the Liverpool striker ignored his manager’s outstretched hand.

Aragones says that the move was a tactical one, meant to tighten up the midfield in order to ensure a clean sheet.

However, despite Torres’ gesture, Aragones insists that things are fine between him and Torres. Speaking to the Spanish newspaper Marca, Aragones said, “I understand why the player is angry and I am behind him, but it is important to correct these things afterwards. They are things which stay in the dressing-room. But things won't stay like that. We won't let things like that fester.”

Fernando Torres had unselfishly set up his strike partner David Villa for the opening goal, when most strikers would have taken the shot on themselves. Villa, responded by running to Torres to celebrate his hat-trick, and Aragones insists that the team is in good spirits.

Aragones said. “I understand that a player gets angry when he is substituted, it has happened to me, but the atmosphere in the team is extraordinary.”

Spain are top of Group D on goal difference, a group which also includes Sweden, Russia and Greece.
