The fulcrum of Italy’s midfield, Andrea Pirlo may not be the force of old but he still has the capability to control a game of football.

 

A master of cute passes that can unlock defences, Pirlo played a crucial role alongside Gennaro Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf and Kaka in the great AC Milan side that reached three European Cup finals in the space of five years, winning two of them.

He is one of the most experienced players in the Italy squad and his composure on the ball and the way he keeps possession with ease will provide assurance for team’s younger players.

As well as being a precise passer who can orchestrate his team, Pirlo is also a threat from set-pieces.

But since their fine run in the Champions League, Milan have been in decline and Pirlo has struggled to maintain his usual high standards.

The objective from Pirlo’s opponents will be to stifle him - but as long as the playmaker can escape from the shackles and play well, then so will his team during the 2010 World Cup tournament.
