Xabi Alonso could miss Spain’s last-16 clash with Portugal due an ankle injury.

The former Liverpool midfielder sustained the problem during his country’s 2-1 win over Chile in the group stages, which sealed Spain’s place in the knockout phase of the World Cup.

 

Alonso said: “I have a sprain. We'll have to test it out over the next few days and see how it feels and if I can make the Portugal match."

Cesc Fabregas could deputise in the Spanish midfield if Alonso fails to recover, while Javi Martinez is also in the frame to start.

Spain began their campaign in South Africa by losing to Switzerland but Vicente del boque’s side recovered with wins against Honduras and the Chile to clinch first place in their group.
