Allardyce and Shepherd

Following a week of speculation Sam Allardyce has finally held talks with the Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd regarding the managers post at the North East club. Sam Allardyce resigned as Bolton manager on 29th April news which was broken online at Free Football TV. He was replaced by deputy Sammy Lee. Glenn Roeder resigned as manager of Newcastle United last weekend after an emergency board meeting was called following the clubs defeat to Blackburn. For many the resignation was an alternative to being sacked as the board meeting suggests.

Shepherd was spotted in a London hotel on Friday having lunch with Allardyce. Neither side have ruled out an appointment for big Sam and Shepherd remains positive he can lure the successful manager to Tyneside.  Sam Allardyce turned down the chance to manage Newcastle United 3 years ago. He was also taken into consideration last summer for the England manager job but Steve McClaren was appointed instead. After the England debacle Allardyce pledged his focus to Bolton a team challenging for UEFA Cup placement. However, with only 2 games left to play in the English Premier League 2006-07 season he resigned.

While talks progress – Newcastle United will be managerless for their final game of the season away to Watford. Glenn Roeder’s number 2 Nigel Pearson will be assisted by Lee Clark and Terry McDermott to organize the Magpies side for the encounter. They will be wanting a convincing win over relegated Watford to convince Allardyce and other potentials of the untapped ability at the club.
