Milan started brighter and had the better of the first-half chances, though Zurich began grow in confidence and had one clear cut chance which was wasted. The second-half was much of the same, and after Emerson missed a glorious chance for the Italian giants it seemed that neither side was to break the deadlock. Then on 70 minutes, an ingenius pass from Ronaldinho found the path of Andriy Shevchenko, who sealed the tie with a cool finish from close range.

After drawing Portsmouth, Wolfsburg, Heerenveen and Braga, AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti admitted Pompey and Wolfsburg posed the biggest threat in the group, though he still expects his team to win Group E. In Serie A, Cagliari picked up their first points of the season after a 0-0 draw with AC Milan, as the Italian giants missed the chance to move up to fifth in the table after the goalless draw. Cagliari had lost their previous five games and were up against a Milan side in high spirits after their derby win against Internazionale. However, it was Cagliari who edged the game throughout and had it not been for a lack of quality in front of goal, the game could have easily finished in a shock result for AC Milan.
