United lost the inaugural Audi Cup on penalties to Bayern Munich recently. They beat Boca Juniors 2-1 in the semifinal, with Luis Valencia scoring on debut, but could not repeat the same result against Louis Van Gaal's men. The game ended goalless after normal time, and Bayern triumphed 7-6 in the penalty shootout. Defenders Patrice Evra and Jonny Evans missed their spot kicks for United.

United's pre-season results have been quite encouraging. The Red Devils had a successful tour of Asia, and might have even won their final against Bayern on another day. Sir Alex Ferguson is expected to experiment a bit in this game as it comes just before the Community Shield clash against Chelsea.

Valencia finished a poor sixth in La Liga last season, but managed to qualify for the playoff round of the newly formed Europa League. Los Che have already played five friendlies in preparation for the 2009-10 season, and are yet to be defeated.

They started off with a 4-1 win over ADO Den Haag and then beat both Udinese and Borussia Dortmund on penalties in a competition staged to celebrate Dortmund's 100^th anniversary. They again played German opposition in the form of Werder Bremen, and again triumphed on penalties after the game ended 2-2 after normal time. Most recently, Valencia beat Cardiff City 2-0 in Wales, with Nikola Zigic and Joaquin scoring. The likes of David Silva and David Villa did not feature against Cardiff, but are expected to play against Man United.
