The Gers took advantage of Celtic’s Scottish Cup commitments to climb up to the top of the table with another narrow victory as they overcame St Mirren to register a 2-1 win. Sasa Papac had opened the scoring just past the half hour mark.

But St Mirren equalized through Darren McGregor only for Steven Whittaker to wrap up the points from the penalty spot seven minutes into the second half.

The victory sees Rangers go a point clear of their title rivals but Celtic do have a game in hand. Coach Walter Smith will be keen to negate that advantage by opening up a four point lead over the Bhoys and with just four more games remaining after this weekend’s clash, a victory could very well decide who will be lifting the trophy come the end of the season.
