Wolves went into their game against Newcastle United with every chance of walking away with at least a point from the game but were on the back foot right from the start as the Magpies completely dominated the game. Goals from Kevin Nolan, Shola Ameobi and Peter Lovenkrands had given Newcastle a three goal lead five minutes into the second half and though Wolves managed to reduce the deficit through Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Jonas Gutierrez restored the three goal lead for the Magpies.

The defeat sees Wolves remain firmly in the relegation zone but with West Ham and Blackpool also losing out, McCarthy’s side are just one point away from safety and the Wolves manager will be optimistic that their survival is in their own hands.

Meanwhile Everton will be disappointed not to have taken advantage of Aston Villa’s off-field turmoil by collecting all three points. Both the teams rode on some dodgy decision by the referee to secure a hard fought point though it was enough for Everton to climb to seventh in the league table.
