The Hammers are off to their worst start in more than three decades after losing their opening four games and pressure is already building on manager Avram Grant with reports suggesting that the Israeli coach will be sacked unless he manages to win at least one of West Ham’s next two games against Stoke and Sunderland.

Grant will not be in charge of the game against Stoke this weekend with the Hammers board agreeing to his request of being excused on the account of Yom Kippur. While Zeljko Petrovic would have been the man to take over Grant, it is Paul Groves who will be in charge for the game thanks to having had the experience of managing a club before.

Meanwhile Stoke will be looking to build on their first win of the new season as they beat Aston Villa on Monday. The Potters had lost their opening three games but late goals by Kenwyne Jones and Robert Huth saw them bounce back from a goal down to win the game late in injury time.

With both Thomas Sorensen and Kenwyne Jones returning to full fitness, there are no major injury concerns for Stoke while West Ham will be missing defender Tal Ben Haim though new signing Thomas Hitzlsperger could make his first appearance for the club.
