Hughton had masterminded Newcastle’s instant return to the Premier League by winning the Championship last season and looked well on course for a respectable finish this season. However owner Mike Ashley finally decided to lend some credence to rumors that Hughton will be out of the job in spite of some excellent performances in their recent games by sacking the former Tottenham coach.

Newcastle players have expressed their unhappiness over the move with both Sol Campbell and Kevin Nolan going public by airing their displeasure. Reserve team coach Peter Beardsley will be in charge of the club for the game against Liverpool with former Tottenham coach Martin Jol tipped to replace Hughton after resigning from Ajax on Monday.

Liverpool on the other hand will be looking to take full advantage of the turmoil at St James Park by notching another victory following their 3-0 thrashing of Aston Villa on Monday. Ryan Babel, David Ngog and Maxi Rodriguez were on target as Liverpool secured a comfortable victory and move to eighth in the league table.

Fernando Torres is expected to return to the starting lineup for Liverpool after missing the game against Villa due to personal reasons while Nolan is the only major doubt for the Magpies.
