Manchester United will be looking to build on their excellent performance in the Community Shield when they welcome newly promoted side Newcastle United in their opening Premier League match on Monday. The Red Devils secured a comfortable 3-1 win over Chelsea with Antonio Valencia, Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov on target. Manager Alex Ferguson was pleased with his side’s performance and will be optimistic that it will provide the perfect platform to wrest their title back from Chelsea this season.

Ferguson has admitted that he will not be dipping into the transfer market this season having already signed Hernandez and Chris Smalling for a combined fee of around 20 million. The United manager will be without Rio Ferdinand for the tie with the English defender yet to recover from his injury.

Newcastle United on the other hand will be hoping for a repeat of their performance from their last visit to Old Trafford. A 22nd minute goal by Obafemi Martins helped them secure a well deserved draw and manager Chris Hughton will be hopeful for a similar result this time around.
