Houllier was in charge of Liverpool from 1998 to 2004 and oversaw one of the most successful periods for the club in recent years, winning a UEFA Cup, a FA Cup and two Carling Cups before leaving the club.

The Gunners had taken a two goal lead in the first half through Andrey Arshavin and Samir Nasri and though Ciaran Clark grabbed two goals for Villa, Marouane Chamakh and Jack Wilshere struck to maintain their side’s two goal advantage in the second half.

Liverpool on the other hand suffered a disappointing defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in spite of dominating the first half. The Reds squandered a number of great chances though Martin Skrtel put his side in the lead but the Liverpool defender restored parity with an own goal before Aaron Lennon grabbed the winner in injury time.

Liverpool will be without Jamie Carragher with the defender out for at least a month while Steven Gerrard too is out of action with a hamstring injury.
