Darren Bent shocked both Sunderland fans and manager Steve Bruce by handing a written transfer request after it emerged that Aston Villa had made an offer excess of 20 million. While Bent has not been as prolific in front of the goal as last season, Sunderland are sure to miss his presence up front and Bruce is likely to get a replacement before the transfer window shuts down.

The news will come as a dampener for fans who were celebrating a late equalizer by Asamoah Gyan in the Tyne-Wear derby after Newcastle United had taken the lead through Kevin Nolan.

Meanwhile Blackpool will be hoping to bounce back from their disappointing defeat to West Brom and secure at least a point against Sunderland as they look to remain well clear of the relegation zone. Goals from Peter Odemwingie and James Morrison had given West Brom a 2-1 lead in the second half but Gary Taylor-Fletcher looked to have secured a point for Blackpool by pulling level only for Odemwingie to grab a late winner for the Baggies.
