The Magpies looked set for a heavy defeat after conceding four goals in the opening 25 minutes to Arsenal. However Abou Diaby’s sending off in the 50th minute changed the game with Joey Barton reducing the deficit in the 68th minute before three goals in space of 12 minutes through Barton, Leon Best and Cheik Tiote saw Newcastle come away with a point from the game.

While Newcastle did benefit from a couple of poor decisions by referee Phil Dowd, especially for the second penalty, they also had a perfectly valid goal ruled out while there was no controversy in the equalizer scored brilliantly by Tiote.

Blackburn on the other hand slumped to another disappointing defeat as they were beaten 4-3 by a James McCarthy inspired Wigan Athletic side. The defeat was Blackburn’s third loss in their last four games and with Aston Villa and Fulham up next, manager Steve Kean will be aware that his side has a difficult task on hand if they are to remain in the top half of the table.

Blackburn had secured a hard fought 2-1 win when both the teams met early in the season but with Sam Allardyce now no longer at the club, Newcastle start the game as favorites to collect at least a point.
