The Blues secured their first win since their lifting the Carling Cup with a hard fought performance against Bolton Wanderers last weekend. Kevin Phillips justified manager Alex McLeish’s decision to hand him his first start of the season by putting the Blues ahead early in the first half before Craig Gardner doubled the lead just before the hour mark.

Bolton threatened a late comeback with Johan Elmander reducing the deficit in the 70th minute but were unable to get the equalizer in the closing stages of the game. McLeish was delighted with the result that sees his side climb to 15th in the league table, two points above the drop zone with a game in hand over their nearest rivals.

Blackburn boss Steve Kean too will be delighted with his side’s display last weekend as they held Arsenal to a stalemate at the Emirates. Blackburn played with just 10 men for the final 15 minutes after Steven Nzonzi was sent off but the visitors hung on to deny Arsenal any late breakthroughs.

Birmingham had secured a hard fought 2-1 win against Blackburn early in the season and McLeish will be confident of repeating the result this weekend.
