The Gunners had gone into their Carling Cup final clash against Birmingham City as clear favorites to lift the trophy but struggled to stamp their authority on the game. The Blues took a shock lead through Nikola Zigic and though Robin Van Persie managed to equalize, a horrendous error between keeper Wojciech Szczesny and Laurent Koscielny allowed Obafemi Martins to grab the winner a minute from the final whistle.

The result was a massive blow for manager Arsene Wenger who was confident that his side could finally end their six year wait for some silverware. Wenger revealed that both Szczesny and Koscielny were very disappointed at the result though he refused to blame either of them for the mix-up.

With the overall morale at Arsenal pretty low, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce will keen to take advantage by ending a four match losing streak. The Black Cats last collected points by beating Blackpool back in January but since they have lost their last four games to drop down to eighth in the league table.

Sunderland had held Arsenal to a deserved 1-1 draw early in the season and have a decent record against the Gunners, losing just one of the last five games between the two sides.
