The Catalan giants dropped two points against Sporting Gijon and followed it up with a shock defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League while they were far from convincing in their narrow victory over Athletic Bilbao in their last match.

With Real Madrid not playing until Thursday, Barca coach Josep Guardiola will be aware that his side can increase the pressure on their title rivals by collecting three vital points that could see them pull eight points clear at the top.

Meanwhile Valencia will be looking to improve on their narrow defeat to Barcelona early in the season.  The Valencianistas are currently third in the league table and while there is no danger of them dropping out of the top four, coach Unai Emery will be keen to make sure that his side consolidates its position that will see them automatically qualify to the group stages of the Champions League.
