Two dropped points against Sporting Gijon and a shock defeat to Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League tie had led to speculations that Barcelona had hit a rough patch. The feeling was reiterated as they struggled to put away Athletic Bilbao last weekend after Andoni Iraola cancelled out David Villa’s opener.

However Lionel Messi made sure that his side did not drop any more points as he marked his 250th appearance by grabbing the winner 12 minutes from the final whistle.

With Real Madrid facing a difficult trip away to Deportivo La Coruna and with Barca themselves taking on Valencia in their next match, coach Josep Guardiola will be keen to make sure that his side will secure a comfortable victory at Mallorca.
