The defending champions were expected to thrash newly promoted side Hercules in their last league match but suffered a shock defeat in front of their home fans. Nelson Valdez gave Hercules a shock lead midway through the first half before putting the result beyond Barca’s reach with a brilliant effort in the second half.

Though coach Josep Guardiola had made a couple of changes to his side, resting Xavi and Sergio Busquets, Barcelona were expected to secure a comfortable victory and Guardiola admitted that the better side won the game.

Atletico on the other hand are off to a perfect start, winning all of their three opening matches and sit at the top of the league table. After a poor start to the last season, fans will be optimistic of the start under coach Quique Sánchez Flores and will be hopeful of at least a Champions League spot come the end of the season.
