The Argentine superstar was injured during Barca’s narrow win over Atletico Madrid last weekend where he had played a key role in helping his side secure their first win in four games at the Vicente Calderon.

Messi sprained his ankle after a late tackle from Tomas Ujfalusi and while it was thought that 23-year old would be out for a longer period of time, scans revealed that the Argentina international will be available for the trip to Athletic this weekend, but may not play.

Meanwhile Athletic Bilbao will be looking to maintain their good start to the season that has seen them collect four points from their opening three games. Joaquin Caparros’ side started the season with a victory over Hercules and though they suffered a narrow defeat to Atletico, Bilbao bounced back with a 2-2 draw against Sporting Gijon last weekend.

Gaizka Toquero, Iker Muniain and David Lopez continue to remain out of action for Athletic which could mean another start for Igor Martinez who made his debut against Sporting last week.
